PSE Timber - Planed Square Edge and PAR Timber in Stock
What Is PSE Timber?
PSE timber stands for Planed Square Edge, and refers to timber that has been machined on all four faces to produce smooth surfaces and clean, square edges. It is also commonly called PAR timber, which stands for Planed All Round. Both terms describe the same product — timber that has been planed from a rough sawn section to a smooth, consistent finish suitable for interior joinery, furniture, shelving and decorative applications. PSE timber is the standard choice where a clean, ready-to-use section is needed without further planing on site. Finished dimensions are smaller than the nominal size due to the material removed during planing.
PSE Timber Species and Sizes
Our planed square edged timber range covers four species to suit different project requirements. Redwood PSE is available in nominal 25mm, 50mm and 75mm thicknesses with widths from 50mm up to 225mm, making it the most versatile option for general joinery work. Whitewood PSE is stocked in 32mm sections up to 275mm wide, suited to shelving and board applications. Pine PSE covers smaller sections from 6mm x 44mm up to 34mm x 44mm for beading, stop and trim work. American white oak PSE is available in 25mm nominal thickness in a range of widths for hardwood joinery and furniture.

PSE vs PAR Timber: Is There a Difference?
PSE and PAR are used interchangeably across the UK timber trade and refer to the same type of planed timber. PSE (Planed Square Edge) is the more commonly used term in England, while PAR (Planed All Round) is often preferred in Scotland and parts of the trade. Some suppliers use PSE to indicate that only the faces are planed and the edges are left as sawn, while PAR means all four sides are planed, but in practice most suppliers stock the same product under both names. If you are unsure, check the finished dimensions listed on each product — PSE and PAR sections are always sold by their nominal size with the finished size smaller after planing.
