What Is Tongue and Groove Cladding?
Tongue and groove cladding boards interlock along their long edges, with a projecting tongue on one edge fitting into a groove on the next. This interlocking joint creates a continuous, tight-fitting surface across the wall. Treated Redwood vs Western Red Cedar: Which Should You Choose?
Our treated redwood T&G cladding is a pressure treated softwood option in 25mm x 125mm, available in standard lengths and suited to most external cladding projects where cost-effectiveness matters. It can be painted or stained once fixed. Our western red cedar T&G is a naturally durable hardwood in 25mm x 150mm, sold per metre in random lengths. Cedar contains natural oils that resist moisture and decay without the need for chemical treatment, making it a good choice where a premium, chemical-free finish is preferred. Cedar weathers to a silver-grey if left untreated or holds its colour well with an oil or stain applied.
Tongue and groove cladding can be fixed horizontally or vertically depending on the look required. For horizontal fixing, work from the bottom upwards, slotting each board into the one below. For vertical fixing, work from one side to the other. Secret nailing through the tongue is the preferred method as it leaves no visible fixings on the face of the boards. Leave a small gap at cut ends to allow for timber movement, and treat all cut ends with a suitable end grain preservative before fixing. For best results, fix to treated timber battens or a timber frame to allow ventilation behind the cladding.
