Treated feather edge boards from Nottage Timber, available for fast UK delivery. The traditional choice for closeboard garden fencing, each board is tapered so that boards overlap when fixed vertically to arris rails, creating a solid, weather-resistant fence line. Our feather edge fencing boards are pressure treated to protect against rot and decay and are ready to fix without additional treatment.
Feather Edge Boards for Closeboard Garden Fencing
How Feather Edge Fencing Works
Feather edge fencing is built by fixing tapered softwood boards vertically to horizontal arris rails, with each board overlapping the previous one by around 25 to 30mm. The taper on each board sheds rainwater away from the fence and allows the overlap joint to close tightly, producing a solid, windproof fence that maintains privacy. Unlike fence panels, which must be replaced in full sections, closeboard fencing built from individual boards allows you to replace damaged boards one at a time, making it a cost-effective long-term option for domestic boundaries. The finished fence can be treated or painted to match any garden scheme and sits well on uneven ground because each board is fixed independently to the rail.
Treated Feather Edge Boards for Outdoor Use
Our feather edge fencing boards are pressure treated to Use Class 3 (above-ground outdoor use), which means the preservative is forced deep into the timber cells to provide long-term protection against rot, fungal decay and insect attack. Treatment is particularly important for fencing boards because they are exposed to repeated wetting and drying cycles, UV exposure and contact with soil splash at ground level. Treated boards arrive with a green tint from the preservative, which fades to a natural grey-brown as the timber weathers. Treatment does not affect the ability to overpaint or stain the boards once they have dried out after installation.

Sizes, Quantities and Installation Tips
Feather edge boards are most commonly available in 100mm, 125mm and 150mm widths (nominal face width before taper). Standard lengths are 1.2m, 1.5m, 1.8m and 2.4m to suit different fence heights. When calculating quantities, divide your total fence run by the net cover per board (typically 75 to 100mm depending on overlap) and multiply by the number of boards in height. Add 10 per cent for waste and breakage. Fix boards with galvanised nails or screws into each arris rail, checking for plumb on every second or third board. Tension a string line along the top of the boards to keep the fence head consistent across the full run.
