What Is Shiplap Cladding and How Does It Work?
Shiplap cladding boards overlap at a rebated or stepped joint along each edge, creating a weatherproof covering that sheds water away from the wall surface. The overlapping profile means each board covers the top edge of the one below, preventing water from tracking back behind the cladding. Shiplap is one of the most widely used profiles for timber-clad sheds, garden buildings and outbuildings in the UK because it is straightforward to fix, cost-effective and gives a clean horizontal finish. Treated Rebated Halflap vs Thermowood Shiplap: Which Should You Choose?
Our treated rebated halflap shiplap is pressure treated softwood, suitable for sheds, garden buildings and general external cladding where cost-effectiveness is a priority. The treatment protects against fungal decay and insect attack for a long service life outdoors. Our Thermowood D Pine shiplap is thermally modified at high temperature, which reduces moisture content and improves dimensional stability and durability without chemical preservatives. Thermowood is a good choice where a natural, chemical-free option is preferred, or where the cladding will be left unfinished to weather to a natural grey.
Shiplap cladding is fixed horizontally to timber battens or a timber frame, starting from the bottom of the wall and working upwards so each board overlaps the one below. Boards should be fixed through the face into the batten behind, with a small gap at each end to allow for movement. Treated shiplap can be painted or stained once fixed. Thermowood shiplap can be left unfinished to weather to a natural silver-grey, or treated with a UV-resistant oil or stain to maintain its colour. Both profiles are suited to garden buildings, sheds and outbuildings.
