Timber Garden Fencing for Every Boundary Project
Closeboard Fencing: The UK's Most Popular Garden Fence
Closeboard fencing built from feather edge boards and arris rails is the most widely installed timber fence style in the UK. Each feather edge board is tapered along its width so boards overlap when fixed vertically to the rails, creating a solid, wind-resistant barrier that drains well and maintains privacy. Individual boards can be replaced if damaged, which makes closeboard fencing a practical long-term choice for domestic gardens. Our treated feather edge boards are pressure treated to UC3 standard for above-ground outdoor use, so they are ready to fix without any additional treatment.
Fence Panels, Posts and Rails
As well as feather edge boards and closeboard components, we stock a range of fence panels, fence posts and arris rails for complete fence installations. Fence panels offer a quick installation option where a consistent panel pattern is required, while posts and rails allow you to build a custom fence to your own specification. Timber fence posts are available in treated softwood suitable for ground contact. Arris rails provide the horizontal support structure for closeboard and feather edge fences and are available in standard UK fence lengths. Gravel boards sit at the base of a fence run, protecting the bottom of fence boards from ground moisture and extending the life of the installation.
All timber used in outdoor fencing should be treated, and most of what we stock comes treated as standard. Treated softwood is pressure impregnated with preservative to protect against rot, fungal decay and insect attack, giving the timber a much longer service life than untreated wood in an outdoor environment. For fence posts, always choose a post rated for ground contact (Use Class 4), as ground contact conditions are far more demanding than above-ground exposure. For boards, rails and panels, a Use Class 3 treatment is appropriate. Treated timber may have a green tint when freshly treated, which fades to a natural grey or brown as the timber weathers over its first season outdoors.
