Roofing Batten and Structural Roofing Timber
Roofing Batten — Sizes, Treatment and Standards
Roofing batten is the horizontal timber fixed across rafters to provide a fixing point for roof tiles or slates. We stock two standard sizes: 19x38mm for lighter tile loads and 25x50mm for heavier tile types or where wider batten spacing is required. All of our roofing battens are Tanalised Type A, meaning they are pressure treated to Use Class 2 standard and comply with BS 5534, the British Standard for slating and tiling. Treated roofing batten resists fungal decay and insect attack, which is particularly important in the damp, ventilated environment of a pitched roof.
C24 Structural Roofing Timber for Rafters and Joists
C24 graded timber is the recommended strength class for structural roofing applications in the UK, including rafters, purlins and ceiling joists. Our roofing timber stock includes C24 sizes commonly used in cut roof construction: 47x100mm, 47x125mm and 47x200mm sections, all pressure treated and kiln dried for dimensional stability. Using graded, treated structural timber ensures the roof frame meets current building regulations and provides the strength and longevity needed for a long-term installation. All sections are available to order online with fast delivery to site across the UK.
Timber firrings are tapered sections used in flat roof construction to create a fall, allowing water to drain away from the roof surface. Building regulations require a minimum fall of 1:80 on flat roofs, and firrings provide a straightforward way to achieve this within the existing roof structure. Our sawn timber firrings are available cut to order in a range of rise heights and lengths to suit different spans and required falls. Firrings are laid across the flat roof joists before the decking is fixed, with the taper directing water towards the guttering or rainwater outlets.
