Fitting and handling

Store MDF flat and off the ground in a dry, well-ventilated space before use, allowing at least 24 hours for the boards to acclimatise to the room temperature and humidity of the installation area. Fix using screws with pilot holes, particularly near edges, to prevent splitting, and use a good-quality MDF primer before applying topcoats for a sound, even finish. Always cut in a well-ventilated area or wear a suitable dust mask, as MDF generates fine dust during machining.

FAQ

What thickness of MDF should I use for shelving?

For shelves carrying moderate loads over spans up to around 600mm, 18mm is the most common choice, but the 12mm sheets stocked here suit lighter-duty applications or shelves with additional framing or edging. Deeper spans or heavier loads will need additional support or a thicker board.

Can standard MDF be used in kitchens or bathrooms?

Standard MDF is rated for interior dry conditions only and will swell or delaminate if exposed to sustained moisture or steam. For kitchens and bathrooms you should use moisture-resistant MDF instead. These standard sheets are suitable for general joinery in dry interior rooms.

Does MDF need sealing before painting?

Yes. The face and edges of MDF are porous and will absorb paint unevenly without a primer. Apply one or two coats of a dedicated MDF primer or a diluted PVA solution to the edges before topcoating for a smooth, professional result.
