What it's used for

  • Skirting boards along the base of walls in living rooms, hallways and bedrooms
  • Door architrave sets around internal door frames and linings
  • Kitchen and bathroom installations where moisture resistance is required
  • Matching skirting and architrave runs for a consistent profile throughout a room

Fitting and handling

Store lengths flat or supported along their full span before fitting to prevent bowing. Allow the moulding to acclimatise in the room for at least 24 hours before fixing. Secure with construction adhesive and lost-head nails or a finish nailer, fill any nail holes with a flexible decorator's filler, then apply your chosen top coat of paint directly over the primed surface.

FAQ

Can pencil round MDF skirting be used in bathrooms?

Yes. This moulding is made from moisture resistant MDF, which makes it suitable for use in kitchens and bathrooms where humidity levels are higher than in standard living spaces. It is not suitable for areas with direct water contact.

Does it need sanding before painting?

The white primer coat provides a smooth, even base that in most cases does not need sanding. A light scuff with fine-grit paper before the top coat can improve adhesion on newly primed surfaces, but it is not essential.

What is the difference between the 44mm and 68mm sizes?

The 44mm width is commonly used as architrave around door frames, while the 68mm and wider sizes are more typical for skirting boards. Using the same profile in both applications gives a coordinated look across a room.
