What it's used for

  • Skirting boards along the base of internal walls to cover the gap between plaster and floor
  • Architrave around door frames and window openings for a neat, finished edge
  • Replacement mouldings when refreshing a room or matching an existing simple profile
  • New-build and renovation projects where a minimal, unfussy moulding is specified

Fitting and handling

Allow the timber to acclimatise in the room where it will be fitted for at least 48 hours before cutting and fixing, as redwood will move slightly in response to changes in humidity. Fix skirting using cut nails or screws into the wall plugs, or adhesive where a nail-free finish is preferred; architrave is typically pinned to the door lining with oval nails and set with a nail punch. Seal all faces, including the back and end grain, before or after fitting to reduce moisture movement and improve paint adhesion.

FAQ

What is the difference between nominal size and finished size?

The nominal size is the rough-sawn measurement used for ordering and reference. The finished size is the actual dimension after the timber has been machined and profiled, so a 100mm nominal length will measure approximately 95mm once planed and moulded.

Can pencil round redwood skirting be used in a bathroom or kitchen?

Redwood skirting can be used in kitchens and bathrooms provided it is thoroughly sealed on all faces with a moisture-resistant paint or primer before fitting. In areas with heavy steam or standing water, an MDF-core or fully primed alternative may be more appropriate for long-term stability.

Does this profile match other mouldings in the same range?

Yes. The pencil round profile is available in both skirting and architrave cuts, so you can achieve a consistent look across the base of walls and around door openings throughout a room. Both are machined to the same profile specification at our Bridgend workshop.
