Use a PZ2 driver bit and, where possible, pre-drill pilot holes in hardwood or dense timber to prevent splitting and ensure the head sits flush. A2 stainless steel does not require any additional treatment before or after fixing, though pairing these screws with compatible stainless fixings throughout a project avoids galvanic corrosion. Store unused screws in a dry location to keep threads clean and free of debris between uses.
What is the difference between A2 and A4 stainless steel screws?
A2 (Grade 304) stainless steel offers good corrosion resistance suitable for most outdoor timber applications in the UK. A4 (Grade 316) provides higher resistance to chlorides and salt water, making it the preferred choice for true marine environments or swimming pool surrounds. For standard exterior joinery and cladding, A2 is generally sufficient.
Can I use A2 stainless steel screws with treated timber?
Yes. A2 stainless steel screws are compatible with pressure-treated and preservative-treated timber, including UC3 and UC4 treated products. Some timber treatments contain copper compounds that can corrode standard steel fixings, so stainless steel is the recommended choice when working with treated structural or exterior timber.
What driver bit do these screws take?
These screws have a cross-recessed Pozidriv head and take a PZ2 driver bit for the 3.5mm diameter across all available lengths. Using the correct bit size reduces cam-out and helps achieve a clean countersunk finish.
