Quick answer: A door lining is the timber frame fitted inside a stud or block wall opening that the door hangs from. Standard UK door linings come in widths from 107mm (single stud wall) up to 195mm (block wall with plasterboard both sides). Choose the lining width to match your wall thickness, then add a door frame kit (lining + stops + architrave) for a complete install.
We stock UK standard door linings and full door frame kits in softwood and hardwood, ready for collection from our Bridgend yard or delivery across South Wales. Sized to match every common UK wall build-up.

Door lining vs door frame kit: what's the difference?
Door lining — the three pieces of timber (two jambs + a head) that line the opening and the door hangs from. Used for internal doors.
Door frame kit — a complete pre-cut package containing the lining, planted door stops, and sometimes architrave. Saves cutting on site and ensures consistent dimensions.
Door frame — typically refers to external doors, made from heavier-section timber with rebates and weather seals.
For most internal renovations, a kit is faster, more accurate, and only marginally more expensive than buying the components loose.
How to choose the right door lining width
-
Measure your wall thickness — from one finished face (paint or plaster) to the other.
-
Match the lining width to that figure using the table above. The lining should sit flush with both wall faces — never proud, never recessed.
-
Check your door size — UK internal doors are typically 1981mm × 762mm or 1981mm × 838mm. Linings are sized to suit, but always check before ordering.
-
Decide on the door stop — a planted stop (separate strip) is more flexible; a rebated lining is neater but less forgiving on door thickness.
Softwood vs hardwood door linings
Softwood (redwood/whitewood) — the standard for internal door linings. Takes paint beautifully, easy to fit, cost-effective. Use this for 95% of UK internal door installations.
Hardwood (oak, sapele) — for stained or natural-finish installs where the lining will be visible. Heavier, more expensive, but matches premium oak doors and skirting.
